**** I'm glad I had tried Pulfrich on several occasions with regular TV
before this show. One person watching with me was seeing Pulfrich for the
first time and I felt that the intermittent use of it at the start did a
disservice to the effect. It was well into the show (specifically the
sunflowers scene) before that person started actually perceiving that there
was a 3D effect. The idea of removing the glasses when the special sequence
was over may prevent eyestrain for the sensitive, but it only made the
concept of Pulfrich harder to understand (when is it going to be 3d?). If
the segments had been 75% Pulfrich so there was a dramatic difference in
movement quality and quantity compared to the main show content, it would
have made more sense. Removing the glasses caused some other interesting 3D
scenes to be missed which may not have been intentional 3D, but could have
been. There were many unused opportunities.
I enjoyed the experimental Pulfrich very much and thought they used just the
right amount, ie: not too much of it. (hallway scenes and zooming effects)
It would seem ideal if one is distributing special glasses for an event to
advise and plan for people to use those glasses on more than one isolated
instance. They easily could have done special effects in more of their
commercials and suggested to folk that the glasses would be fun for those
times. By the time the special arrives, everyone is somewhat experienced and
ready. My friends didn't recall seeing ANY promotion of the glasses relating
to the show, and some of them have the TV on for 75% of their waking day! I
don't watch that much but didn't remember seeing any commercials about the
glasses either.
I called several restaurants (Wendy's regional office and local stores of
Little Ceasars) here in N. California and they all reported running out of
glasses by the second or third day after receiving them. Followed by weeks
of irrate customers who couldn't find glasses that continued to be
advertised. Other than with Barq's rootbeer, which continued to be available
though expensive. 1 pair per 12 pack!!! Ouch.
