What exactly is "too much contrast"?  I frankly don't usually have a
problem recording the scene with the slide films I use (although I
admit when I first showed an avowed print photographer my work, her
very first comment was about how contrasty it was, so this is obviously
a matter of personal taste).

Not me.  I usually follow the rule "expose for the highlights, and
let the shadows fall where they may".  In the case where there's just
too much shadow, I use flash fill.  Works for me.
