You can gently clean albumen prints with one part ammonia/20 parts
distilled water, on a cotton swab. Use sparingly; too much liquid will
dissolve the glue and lift the print. Don't rub too much or too hard.
BEWARE of using water on later prints, such as turn of the century gelatin
prints that show more gloss. Water will quickly destroy the image! These
gelatin prints are usually on curved mounts. Albumen prints are usually on
earlier flat mounts. When in doubt, don't clean. See Waldsmith's
'Stereoviews', page 20, for more on cleaning stereos. A good quality
eraser usually will clean up a mount well. Dick Wood.
