cleaning stereo views - how?

Hi all,
I need the help of the preservationists among the  stereo collectors.
I bought a bunch of stereo cards from around the turn of the century. 
They look very nice, sharp, no fading, but they are very dirty. 
What's the best way of cleaning them? I know I can clean most of the 
views with plain ol' H2O, but what do I do about the mounts? They 
look like they have been buried for the last 97 years or so.
Who can give me any pointers?
