ISU 11th World Congress
- From: P3D John Bradley <JB3D@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I've just arrived home after a splendid week away at the
ISU Congress. Congratulations to the Dutch Stereo Society
for organising an excellent event.
A good sprinkling of Photo3D names appeared on the attendance
list, but for those of you unable to attend here are my awards for
the week.
Award for country with most delegates =
(European Section)
Raw scores
Germany 72
Netherlands 58
Great Britain 26
However under the rules Germany and Netherlands are =
disqualified because they are too close to the conference venue.
=
Rest of World section
USA 29
runner up
Australia 10
Most interesting display at the trade fair:
The Stereoscopic Foundation from Spain.
They have issued a series of 6-view (tru-vue card style) =
tourust/scenic viewcards with a small folding viewer. =
They had a set of ten different cards on sale , at the
remarkable price of about $2.25 for a viewer and one card!
The same people also hope to re-issue the wonderful
"JIN" viewer and tissue filmstrip in the near future, using the
original designs and prints donated by the inventor.
Best stereo projection show:
(The judge admits he didn't see them all)
T. Brucksch (Germany) with his enormous format panoramic
show "Allgau in Weisz" and Schweiz per Bahn".
He uses specially constucted cameras and projectors , which
should be well within the reach of any millionaire interested in
stereo photography.
Most inspirational person at the event: =
Tied between
Hugo de Wijs , for the exhibition of his life as a stereo photographer
"3D for a living- 40 years of stereoscopic views"
For those who don't know , Hugo builds (by hand) commercial
coin in the slot stereo viewers which are then placed at tourist =
locations around Holland. inside are his own superb stereoviews,
which have brought high quality stereo to millions of people.
Paul Wing - what more can I add to what everyone else has said. I
hope I'm as interested/interesting as him when I reach his age. A real
role model.
Moral dilemma of the week:
This was posed by the tour bus visit to the American WWII =
cemetery. 8,200 young Americans who died in the fight =
against fascism are buried here. I found it overwhelmingly =
sad and moving , but the over-riding interest of most of the =
ISU party seemed to be to find the best POV for good stereo =
effect on the memorial crosses. Did we just visit to get a good =
photo? I remain perplexed on this one.
Most worrying moment of the week:
When 2 of the 4 tour buses disappeared during a descent =
down a steep hill with hairpin bends. I was sitting with Ryko =
Prins the ISU President, and asked him how he felt presiding =
over the apparent loss of half the ISU membership in one =
afternoon. He turned very pale.
The two missing busses turned up a hour or so later, and =
we discovered one had suffered a steering failure , and =
had prevented the other from getting past on the narrow road.
Stereoscopic surprise of the week.
This was won by the beautiful bride who emerged from the =
Abbey church where she had just been married , to find =
that in addition to the local professional photographer they =
had booked , a further 49 photographers with strange cameras =
were waiting for her to step in to the shiny vintage Buick .
Best post conference technical discussion:
Awarded to my son Peter(11 yrs) who on seeing the pictures he
had taken over there with his Loreo commented "they're a bit
blurry - not like yours" (ViewMaster Personal and Kodax stereo). =
I think this succinctly brings to to an end the Loreo/Realist thread.
And finally: Book now for the next ISU- to be held in Lindau (Southern =
Germany , 22 to 27 September 1999. Details available from September
from DGS, D-63486 Bruchkobel, Kurt Schumacher-Ring 50, Germany.
