TDC's barn door

I confirmed that the barn door in the TDC 116 will block the
motion of the slide in and out.  If that motion bothers you
then the door is needed.  Later 116 projectors and all 716s
don't need this feature since they came more elaborate
carriers with internal curtains that do the same job.

Since this question was asked in regards to the use of the 
Duke's Projection Previewer, I find the Compco projectors to be 
the best to use with the previewer because they let you separate
the lenses further apart and set the correct window when
using the previewer.
