The fact that that, say, neither MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) nor white
gas (probably mostly heptane) are carcinogens doesn't mean they are
equally non-toxic. My memory of my chemist days is that MEK is not
good to breath. Trust your headaches. 

Any of the relatively safe solvents is OK if the ventilation is
adequate. I would feel safer with white gas than MEK, but then 
I don't smoke.
