Another way to look at it is to get the perspective correct.  
If the perspective is correct, you won't have depth distortion
in stereo any more than you will in mono.
 
If you sit ~17' from a 70" screen (like folks at our club do), 
you need a 70 mm lens to project that 23 mm high image onto
the screen.
 
  70   
 ---- * 68" = 17'
  23
 
Interestingly, Ferwerda suggests using 70 mm lenses for 
taking all projected slide pairs.
