BobH: I acknowledge that a speck in the middle of the lens 
should be so out of focus as not to appear on the image. 
However, the speck between the elements of this Kodak 
was central, and fairly large (around 0.3mm?). And the 
camera is not in great condition anyway. So I went in.

GregW: Comments spot on. There was indeed no need to open the 
shutter mechanism. Your point about noting the orientation 
of the middle lens element (which could have fallen out) was 
just the sort of thing I was looking for.

The speck turned out to be on the inside surface of the rear 
element, and came off immediately with a blower brush. I'm 
afraid I lost it 8*)  .
