I am just starting also and so far this method is quick and easy.  I use
a right triangle to drop the focus point to the bottom and side edges
and mark the edges by cutting them slightly with an exacto knife.  When
I line up the side and bottom nicks, the two photos are ready to cut. 
My templates are soft metal but I haven't decided on the final size
yet.  I think cutting them together gives me better control If the knife
blade is sharp.  Hope this helps.
