Ron Beck told us about his exciting discovery that he can drop his
roll at Target and have the slides back mounted in 3 days for only
$4.95.

>The slides are mounted in heat sealed cardboard mounts
>I reviewed all 24 slides and, IMHO, they're great!

That's great Ron! Now you know how and why a good inexpensive mounting
service is needed for stereo photography to be popular. Such service
was available in the 50s and we should try and keep it alive if we
want to continue to attract new members into stereo.

As I mentioned last night, mounting your oun slides will give you a wider
choice of mounting supplies, more control and some personal satisfaction.
If however instead of satisfaction you get procrastination and frustration
then commercial mounting is the way to go.

I only see one danger in commercial mounting: The person who has not done
their own mounting or is not experienced enough to realize which part of
the final impression is a result of the image itself and which part is a
result of the mounting, this person might pass some good images because
they do not look good due to incorrect mounting. Also this person cannot
tell how can a stereo picture be improved with some teaking in mounting.
I have seen commercially-mounted slides sent to me by beginners and have
noticed that their judgement of which are the best, is in some degree
affected by the mounting job which is random in times. If, by coincidence,
the window is set just right and the alignment is good, they like the
picture. If the window or alignment (or both!) are off then they might
say that the picture is "no good" without realizing that it can be made
to look much better.

In any case, I am glad to hear that Ron has found a nice solution to
the mounting issue and will be taking more stereo pictures in the
future. I just hope he can convince Tim Klein to forget the lenticular
and View-Magic stuff and try some REAL(ist) stereo photography! :-) :-)

And, Ron, if you need a good Realist red button viewer you know who
to contact, right? :-)
