NSA '97

I know its been a while, but I would like to add a few comments to the NSA
'97 reports. This was our first convention, and it was outstanding. It was
great to meet so many people from P3D, and see other people's work.

*In both the slide and stereocard mounting workshops I got ideas for
improving my own work and saw effective ways of explaining the process to
others. I wish we'd had time to go to some of the other workshops.

* One thing I haven't seen mentioned here yet - perhaps no one noticed -
was that the sound system in the stereo theater was excellent, a nice
complement to the big screen visuals. (I'm sure Jon Golden had something to
do with this.)

* I enjoyed seeing stereoview cards by other contemporary photographers in
the exhibition. I would like to have seen more.

I have one suggestion for future conventions:

I would like to see a space devoted to less formal sharing of one's work -
both slides and cards. This area would have a few tables and chairs and a
selection of viewers. At least one person would be pre-scheduled to be
there to keep an eye on the equipment, show off their views, and help
foster discussion. Anyone could stop by for a while to share a few views
and join the conversation. This would provide an opportunity for people to
meet others, see their work, and discuss tips and techniques. This could be
especially helpful to newer 3Ders who aren't yet ready to develop a slide
show or view exhibit. This might also be a good place for people to trade
views with each other.

I realize that the old-timers probably already do this through room-hopping
and such. And, I know at one point, several people took over one end of the
registration desk to pass around assorted slides, cards, and viewers.
However, I think it would be a great way to expand excitement about 3D and
encourage newer photographers.

One more suggestion:

Someone asked during a break in the stereo theater for ideas on how to get
more people to prepare slide shows. A good FAQ or article in Stereo World
on how to do it would be a good start. A workshop on slide show production
at NSA could help, too.
