Digital camera technology

Many of us are anxious for digitial cameras to become more
practical for stereo.  Here is a news item about a technology
development agreement between Polaroid and chip developer Atmel
Corporation.  The companies expect to permit the development of
digital cameras with "higher image quality at lower costs than
currently available."

I don't understand the technology of digital imaging , but the news
item seems to be saying the new single-chip device will replace CCDs
and other components.
