I tried the first one; pages and pages of pretty pictures and turgid
prose were missing in the IBM WEB version. However, it is marvelous.
I spent a very pleasant afternoon a few months ago on it.
In 1990 or 1991, when I did my first patent search, I didn't have
the web. I did have one of the Fed's central patent libraries in
Sunnyvale, CA, which is not too far from where I live. The
microfilm viewers worked quite well. I started before lunch and
got out in time for a late dinner, hungry, but happy.
The only other time was when I worked at Shell. We had lots of help to
do patent searches for the chemists. Hardly sporting.
