Pete Honi asked about possible subjects for his 3D camera in the
Portland area.
The #1 drop dead must see attraction in the immediate area is of course
the Columbia River Gorge.
There is a 20 something mile drive along the old historic highway.
Every couple of miles or so there is a well marked place to stop where
you park your car and usually after a short walk through beautiful woods
you get to view (and photograph) a lovely waterfall. There are a half
dozen or so such stops. One of them is at the famous
Multnomah Falls. Before your arrival at
the first falls there is a stop at an overlook point that gives you a
grand panoramic view of the gorge and river.
These sites were among the early subjects for coverage by View Master,
and have been updated periodically. A fun thing to do would be to check
out these VM views and try to duplicate them when you're there.
Portland is an easy city for nighttime skyline photos. Just drive or
walk across the bridge over the Willamette River (there are several
bridges, use the one nearest the main part of the skyline, near the
waterside park and marina). There is easy access to the shoreline on
the other side. Before you lies the fairly impressive city skyline
posing for its picture! Try it in hyper stereo.
Here's one more. There is a fairly new building called the Oregon
Convention Center. It has two vertical spire things that are lit nicely
at night, The view shows this building with the Portland skyline
directly behind it. You can see this view in the new Portland View
Master blister pack
(see Charlie Van Pelt). There is a Holiday Inn diagonally across the
street from the convention center. The Inn has a staircase on the
outside of the building like a fire escape only much more substantial.
It's completely accessible from the street without entering the hotel!
Grab your stuff, climb up there quietly and you're in business.
Afterwards, go into the Denny's next door and celebrate your creativity
with an ice
cream sundae!
