I might add that if you go as far as the falls, then when you turn
around and come back via the Interstate (if you do), be on the lookout
for a highway directional sign (which I presume is still there). Somewhat
east of Portland is a town called (I kid you not) Boring. The highway
sign has the exits listed in order of distance, and since Boring is
closer, what you have is a sign that says:
BORING
PORTLAND
Or have they changed that, Gary :-)
Certainly worth a photo, I'd think...
Incidentally, I agree about the Columbia River trip - if you hit
good sunny weather, it's VERY interesting - I once spent 3 days just
going 60 miles and seeing all the sites/sights. There is (on the old highway)
a "high point" location (can't remember the name) where I think I
experienced the windiest location short of a tornado I've ever
seen. Lots of real senic stuff - windsurfers challenging barges
full of tons of cargo, the old highway, trains, waterfalls,
and on the north shore, a duplication of StoneHenge built to
commerate the dead of World War I. The Bonneville Dam (if you get
as far as the Dalles - you can go down and watch the fish swimming
up the fish bypass thru aquarium type windows).
(I've photographed all of this because, of course, it's one of the
final legs of the Oregon Trail - US 30, the old highway is
actually built on parts of the trial out east of the gorge :-)
Also extremely interesting up the coast a bit is Mt. St. Helen's Volcanic
National monument - but that's getting pretty far away from the city.
