Sorry to hear of your disaster George. It may comfort you to know you are
not alone. I'll never forget the poor women who came into a camera store I
was working at a few years ago. In preparation for a year holiday in Africa,
she'd purchased new a top-of-the-line Nikon and spent the whole time using
it to document her trip. When she returned with her huge load of exposed
film, she found out the had not a single image due to a defect in the camera!!!!

My rule of thumb I learned from experience is this: Don't trust ANY camera
EVER!!!! If you're shooting several rolls without expecting to process them
until you get back, you're inviting distaster. I always shoot either a black
and white or negative roll during the trip and have it processed locally if
not myself. I don't care how bad the processing is, it's the assurance that
all is going well that I am looking for. Checking the camera in between
rolls is also necessary. Open up the back and fire it a few times at various
speeds and apertures to see all is well.

I too lost several rolls of Kodacrud I'd shot of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, but
I'd found the problem before it was too late and managed to re-shoot.

Sound like a good excuse for a second vacation George!

Sam
