I can't speak for the public at large, but I personally bought a
disposable one, carefully took pictures within the manufacturers
recomendation, got the prints back and was amazed! They are quite nice
if you are careful about setting up the shots, and having appropriate
lighting. 

In fact, I liked it so much that I bought another disposable one to do
some more testing, and then the real McCoy from Joel Alpers. I then used
the "real" one to take pictures of everyone in my last company and make
a "who is who" board in the lobby of everyone in 3D. 

My recommendation: Try one and see what you think. The camera and the
prints will be les than $30, and you can get some really fun images out
of it!
