Arch tops for Stereographs

Recently someone asked about a device to make arched
tops on stereo prints. There is no arch device per se, but
a heavy duty corner rounder, used at a large radius, will
give a very good impression of an arched top.
Such a corner rounder is available ( as far as I know) from
Lassco Products
485 Hague Street
Rochester NY 14606
Tel: 716-235-1991
Cost -- $100.00
This corner rounder is used to make arched tops
by many members of the Stereoscopic Society of
America (the oldest Stereo Organization in the US)
I do not like arched tops on my stereographs as it
makes them look to NEW. From stereo's early beginning
in the 1840s until late 1867, early 1868. all stereographs
had square corners, according to William Darrah's "World
of Stereographs". About this time the Americans started to
round the corners of both the stereographs and the cards.
Some of the Europeans were not willing to switch and kept
their square corners until the 1890s
So, if you want to give your stereo cards an antique look then
square corners is the way to go.
I agree with the comment by P3D Thorpe on using QVu foldover
mounts for stereo cards. I dislike them very much and I would
never encourage anyone to use them. My main complaint is that
when beginners start using QVus they never learn mounting procedures.
I know of several Qvu users in the SSA who do not have the faintest
idea what a proper stereo window is.
