Actually, the arrangement allows you to use whatever different perspective
you need for the ideal stereo pair, without any of those choices interfering
with the other camera's view. In reality the camera seeing the reflection
isn't looking at the identical point on the mirror of the light transmission
to the other camera. That's why the half-silvered mirror idea works. The two
perspectives required for stereo are so close together any other arrangement
would be more difficult. Yes, you could arrange to take a pair that produces
identical perspectives, but that's specifically *not* the intention.
