Q-VU mounts and windows
- From: P3D Alan Lewis <dlewis@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

I'll keep this short and not requote the previous comments.
My comments on Q-VU mounts:
1) A person who can't set a proper window with a Q-VU mount will not set
a proper window with the surface mount technique either. A Q-VU does
not affect how a window is set, it is the person, not the mount. Don't
blame bad windows on the mount.
*To use a Q-Vu properly you must learn how to set a stereo window.
**To use a surface mount stereo card properly you must learn how to set
a stereo window.
What's the difference?
2) If one uses the Grand Photo monolith stereo print (the only one
available) then the window is automatically set properly. I have done
this and it works.
The inventor of the Q-VU did it right. He consulted an expert in the
"old fashioned" way of mounting prints to find out what the window
standard should be. He also consulted the photo finisher to make sure
that their machine prints the pair with the matching spacing based on a
Realist format negative. It is a system that was researched and
implemented as a team.
I have also mounted individual photo's (not the one piece monolith) in
Q-VU's and have had to set my own proper window. It is easy to do and
works beautifully. You just have to understand where the window is in a
Q-VU. To set the window I just set up a permanent trimming mark on my
paper cutter to cut the individual prints for the proper window. My
mounting jig has corresponding marks to show where the print edges go.
Works every time.
3) A couple of advantages of the Q-VU:
A) You have a chance to reset your window if you are off. Since you
trim your prints slightly bigger than the aperture cutout, you can
correct for any cutting errors or for composition.
B) The photo's are set back from the face of the card. The print
surface does not get scuffed from rubbing on other cards or from being
moved around.
4) The only complaint that I have about the Q-VU is that it should be
thicker and stiffer.
Are Q-VU's better than the surface mount technique? It's just
different, that's all. Everyone can make up their own mind based on
their application.
