When I have used a meter it has always been for "existing-light photography"
using my Kodak Stereo. The standard is my 18% gray-card. The light falling
upon the subject is measured for determining exposure. The results have been
nearly perfect every time. Now that I do flash photography with my Realist,
it is much easier than lugging the extra equipment. But the results are not
quite as natural, the colors not so saturated, as with existing light.

And then there's the "snapshot" attitude of subjects. Flash pictures are just
another camera in their face. 1-second time exposures mean we get set the
stage, I call for everyone to freeze, take the shot, then release the
prisoners...er, subjects. Those are the photographs which convey a sense of
importance; the results are more spectacular to me and other viewers. An
interesting phenomenon. :-)

BTW, skip 80a filters for Christmas lights. The warm tones will be charming,
and your camera won't require a long exposure. And you won't be exposed so
long either. ;-)
