P3D January Report from Cleveland...
The Gods of stereo photography were with us tonight with a
wonderful might with 50F max temperature (felt like spring.)
Perhaps these Gods are print makers because our theme tonight
was "Stereo Prints". The presenter, John Waldsmith, is a world
famous stereo collector (we ALL have his book, right?) and
founding member of NSA. John talked about the history of stereo
prints and his experiences as both a collector and a stereo
photographer. His simple and charming style inspired many of
us to give a try to this classic form of stereo imaging.
Members of the club who brought stereo prints to demonstrate
include David Kazdan (View-Magic), Wayne Carberg (wonderful
Holmes' prints) and Peter Smakula (APEC prints - I HAVE TO
TRY THIS!!!) Don Peck brought some of his lovely "multiple
column stereograms" which he invented and patented back in
the 70s.
The second part was a "lecture" by Sam Leber on stereo macro
pictures of minerals. Sam is an active member of the Micro
Mineral Society and his mineral stereo slides have been
exhibited and won awards nation-wide. Sam presented the
details of his equipment and techniques and showed us (in
projection) 29 slides of micro photographs of minerals in
full color and depth.
This is just a brief summary. If you want the FULL DETAILS,
you will have to read them in the Stereogram Vol. 2, No. 6
to be published in 3 weeks. The editor reports that he is
overflowing with material.... Keith Wilson on the Loreo,
David Kazdan on the View Magic, Peter Smakula on APEC,
John Waldsmith on a personal interview, Sam Leber on micro
stereos of minerals AND important sources for stereo print
development, mounts, viewers, the works! Too much material
for one issue... we might have to make it larger (more pages)
and jump one class higher in postage. We'll see...
Until then... let's hope the good weather continues...
Reporting from warm Cleveland in early January,
-- George Themelis
