We have used Gun Bluing. Best to get a piece of brass to develop a technique
that gives you the result you like. Of course, 'New' brass is really brass
with a lacquer or krylon coating to prevent oxidation.  This must be removed
first.  We had great luck making new cheap porch lanterns look like old cheap
porch lanterns.
