>Could it be that the film fest ran the inferior anaglyph versions of "It
Came from Outer Space" and "Creature from the Black Lagoon"? And could
it be that people are so unfamiliar with polarized 3-D that it is
referred to as a "different" method?<
Yes, and yes, unfortunately. I imagine that the anaglyph prints of
"Creature" and "It Came" which were made in the early '80s are all that are
available. And you'll find that almost everyone not intimately familiar
with 3D movies (and many who think they are) have been firmly convinced by
ill-informed sources in recent years that all 3D movies were made to be
viewed anaglyph. When I pointed out this falacy a few months ago I was far,
far, far out-voted by many people right here on the list who clearly
"remembered" seeing House of Wax and other 3D movies in the early '50s
using red and blue glasses. The fact that no such anaglyph prints were ever
produced didn't dissuade all those memories.
What did interest me about the French report was that the Russian "Robinson
Crusoe" is available in a polaroid print! The film was originally filmed in
some kind of unusual process involving louvered screens which, as I
understand it, was viewed without glasses.
