"These things" are still made new.  The offical name is "air release".
Porter's has one for sale for only $12.95 (#10-0281).  Comes with a 20
feet extension.  Useful for taking self portraits with stereo cameras
that lack self-timers.  One disadvantage over mechanical timers is that
the cord or bulb might be in the picture and little kids might be trip on
the cord, but the advantage is that you have control over the each instant
of the exposure, useful when taking picture of a young child in your arms,
waiting for this perfect look in their face.

And yes, combining two of those is a good way to take long base
hyperstereos.

You know, the name "Bulb" for this setting actually came from using such air
releases in early cameras.
