My thanks to Dr. George Themelis for contributing his concise history of
stereo, which I read with great interest. (in Digest 2517)
I'd like to mention that around 1964 Bela Julesz, then at Bell Labs,
brought the "random-dot stereogram" to public attention, laying the
ground-work for a further contribution of autostereograms by CW Tyler,
and the popularization of free-viewing, both parallel and crossed, by
a large proportion of the population in malls and bookstores. Julesz's
work also renewed interest among scientific researchers to understand
the psychophysics and neuro anatomy of stereoscopic perception, using
the random-dot stereogram as an unambiguous stimulus, where nothing
is visible except through binocular disparity processing as depth
cues.
