I agree with the previous posters who say it's resolution-dependent. I do not
usually
see (I can't remember ever seeing) the cardboard effect in (properly focused and
exposed) slides, but still do see it in prints (even my own). I find slides
sharper than prints generally, even those prints taken on Royal Gold 25 with the
same equipment (in this case, an RBT X2B). Your experience, of course, may
vary.
Probably if sufficient care were exercised in the printing process, this could
be mitigated, but I think under "average" conditions (i.e. consumer-quality
labs) this is going to be true (slides will be sharper than prints taken under
equivalent conditions).
