Alright friends,
Now I do feel like a fool. Of course it says right there above Leah's
stereograph what the taking conditions were. I had gone back to look at
it, but must have missed the caption because I was cross-viewing. So you
not only look like a fool when cross viewing...
But I do remember discussing the issue of expanded stereobase to fight
squash with someone on this list (I think it was Ron). This is because
portraiture is my primary interest, and so many have said that I need to
shoot with longer lenses to fight the "stretch" that appears on my site.
But then the slides come out looking squashed in my viewer... Also because
it is common practice to use longer lenses in 2D portraiture to minimize
other distortions ("the big nose effect") introduced by short lenses.
Anyway, since then I've done a little experimenting, and find that shooting
with as much as 80mm lenses doesn't look too bad (- that's without expanded
stereobase), and does bring the subject a bit closer. I also find that the
background needs to be kept completely clear of any detail, because
disparities of more distant objects are magnified by the longer f.l.
Thanks for keeping me on my toes; I think I'll retire to some paying work,
now, and see if I can't extract this big foot in my mouth.
Cheers,
