George, it sounds like a great idea.  It sounds like you need a medium
like CD, or perhaps mini-disc.  CDROM burners that can make disks
playable on ordinary audio CD players are getting very inexpensive these
days.  One feature you probably want in a player is the ability to
program it to keep repeating a track until you tell it to go to the next
one.  That way, if your sound is too short, it will simply keep looping
from the beginning until you move on.  Or you could digitally loop the
sound on the computer before you record it, but you'd have to know just
how long "long enough" is in advance.

Most sound cards these days come with software to do recording and
playback on the computer, and the CDROM burner should come with software
to take a sound file and record it as an audio track.
