I can't believe you are using the words "Pinsharp", "decent quality",
and "undistorted" in the same sentence!  My Pinsharp doesn't allow me to
see an entire 24x36mm slide in focus and without severe pincushioning;
projection does.  With a relatively small number of people (say 5-8),
they can all be seated in side-by-side in a row at the ortho distance.
A lenticular screen like the Da-lite Super Wonderlite is adequately
bright for all in this configuration.  And the color temperature of the
projection lamp gives a much better color rendition than your average
living room incandescent lamp (never mind an office flourescent).

How can you tell?  The optics are so poor...  And color is affected by
the illumination source.

Some of the drawbacks of projection that you noted are very real
(ghosting, having to hold your head rigidly vertical, having to wear
polarizing glasses).  But projection *can* introduce a lot less
distortion than the cheap optics in a $3 viewer...
