No it isn't proprietary. It was developed jointly between VRex,
StereoGraphics, NuVision, Canopus and possibly some others.

That's basically it, hence its simplicity.

This all depends on what application you are using to generate your
images and the quality/resolution of the stereo pair images you are
using.
I've used Adobe Photoshop very successfully to generate JPS images
from left and right image pairs. Check out:
