P3D Re: Grrrrrr....Kodalux!
I have a friend who ALWAYS gets his stereo slides mounted by
Kodalux even though he does not request it... He was happy...
until the last roll. The main problem was that they cut the
chips a bit off the center between two sprockets and in the
wrong direction. As a result, in many stereo pairs you can
see a band of image that belongs to the neighboring pair.
I also noticed that the stereo window was all over the board,
from 4 feet to infinity and that there was occasional vertical
misalignment. As I see it, there are two dangers when using
commercial mounting: The obvious one is to get back damaged
film/pairs/images.
The less obvious is the wrong impression about the quality of
pictures, based on fortunate or unfortunate mounting accidents.
When people send me commercially-mounted slides that they like
or don't like, I have noticed that they like the ones that
("by accident") are mounted just right with the stereo window
placed in the right place, while they don't like ones with
the wrong window, vertical misalignment... or even mounted
pseudoscopic. Of course, some of the pairs in these last
groups can be made to look much better with correct mounting.
Hence remounting is in order.
Commercial mounting is fine if there is no damage in the film
and if the person has the experience to "see through" incorrect
mounting and is capable to remount some of those.
