P3D Twin SLRs w/ mechanical cable release?

I've been experimenting with the twin Ricoh point-and-shoot rig I got from
Alan Lewis, and having a blast with it. I'm going to rewire it, and
eventually make another hinged bracket for it. I also have an extremely
rugged vertical twin bracket for tripod use from John Bercovitz.

I'm having so much fun with this that I'm inspired to want to try using a
pair of SLRs. I already have a Nikon FE2, but I thought that something
more modern, with auto-focus, auto-exposure, built-in motor drive, etc.
might be more suitable. So my questions are:

	1)	What SLR cameras do people recommend for twin rig use? They should
have auto-everything, and accept a cable release or some external
synchronization method.

  2)	Is it possible to get flash-quality synchronization with a mechanical
"Y" cable release?

  3)	If so, is there a way to trick both cameras into believing they each
have a flash, so they will choose the same exposures?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.
