I remember a Scientific American article from (I think) the mid 60's
where babies were placed on a plane of glass over a checkerboard
surface that dropped away on one side. They (or at least some) displayed
a considerable reluctance to crawl out on the glass over the pit. So
it looks like *some* kind of depth perception seems normally wired in
at a very early age.
