One thing to bear in mind is that (depending on your situation) CD ROM
readers are getting pretty cheap. For example, I bought a 5 disk 
CHANGER (new) for the server here for $41 earlier this semseter via
one of the internet auction houses. So if you are running a reasonably
standard configuration, they can be had cheap (I remember back about
a year ago, one of the large computer stores in Dallas was selling
refurbed 2x Philips drives for $19.95).
