Unfortunately, I tend to agree. My wife's success at trying that
wasn't too good either (each 2D photo was okay, but the pairs
really didn't do that well in the over/under viewer).
Although a good cha-cha probably could be learned,
it's usually promoted as the super-easy way to get
started. However for that use getting/mounting a slide bar,
buying a tripod (really, how many non-photo-hobbiests have
a tripod and take it with them for snapshots?) and using it
doesn't seem to really go along with the easy-to-start
objective.
I suspect starting smaller with "put camera on a railing
or ledge and slide it over a couple inches"
might work better, or at least more consistently without
having to go through a few rolls of failures to get the
"hang of it".
To set the "hook" for 3D, something with *instant* success
I think is needed, and something like the nosed Argus (which
isn't that more expensive than the over/under viewer) would be
a lot more successful.
Or even the taped pairs of throw-away cameras.
