P3D Red vs Green Button Optics

Hi Gang!

I'm back after a few months off for good behavior.

I know the personal preferences between stereo viewers have been discussed a
zillion times, but I have only recently had the opportunity to clean and
test a red button and green button Realist viewer at the same time.

As I recall there was an overwelming opinion that the red button viewer had
the best optics. My question is what is the difference between the two?

I took both viewers apart and examined the optics. Both have two-element
achromat lenses. The green has a slightly larger diameter, and didn't have a
coat of black paint on the optic edges.

As far as optical quality, I found vertually no difference is overall
sharpness or edge sharpness. Field of view was also the same. My green
button had far more contrast, but I believe that was due to the difference
in bulbs and the diffusion rather than the optics themselves. Although the
red is an excellent viewer no doubt, I find the convenience of the rheostat
and the choice of batteries/120 adapter of the green button realist far more
appealing.

Any opinions? Why is the Green button second fiddle?

Sam
