Bill.Costa writes: "The 285 is more powerful
than the 283 -- a real flame thrower! One of my favorite features is
that the exposure sensor unplugs from the front for tricky flash work.
Vivitar made an accessory cord which allows you to mount the sensor on
the camera's hot shoe. This allows you to place and point the flash
anywhere you want (within the length of the coiled cord) and the
exposure is still correctly metered because the sensor is located near
the camera's film plane, looking where the camera is. I would imagine
it would be hard to find this accessory cord at this late date, and
since it uses a custom plug configuration I doubt it would be easy to
     make one."

It is true that the 285 is somewhat more powerful than the 283, but the
"remote sensor cord is also available for the 283, Different cord, same
purpose. As far as I know both the 285 and the remote sensor cord are still
manufactured and available at the large camera stores. Both the 283 and the
285 were and are still standard workhorses for photojournalists who still use
manual focus cameras. I even use the 285 (sometimes the 283, too) with both
my old Canon F1 and my newer EOShooked up to a quantum battery pack. Works
just fine. Try B&H in New York. Jim Norman

John, send me your snail mail address (off the list) and I'll see if I
can find the manual for this beast and send you a copy.
