P3D Alignment slide - a good use for the mounting gauge?

The Detroit Club (Derek Gee, to be specific) has done something clever:
They have mounted a mounting gauge in a 7p mount (aluminum and glass).
This works very well.

I personally think that an empty mount (any kind) would do it.  Project
it and align the projector so that the bottom/top and sides of the 
empty mount coincide on the screen.  Does that make sense?  (Focusing
would be a bit tricky though with no image...)

Now, some people will say that the RBT, Albion, etc., mounts have
slight differences in spacing.  So if you align an Albion mount then the
RBT will appear to be floating a bit off the screen.  These differences
are small and it is not worth realigning the projector every time, IMO.
What is most important is that the verticals would be OK.
