Well Chuck, here's your message as I received it in digest 2840.
First, please note the "From:" line in the header below does indeed add
your name. By the looks of it, I would guess that your mail server is a
unix system. Just a guess though.
Next, please note you did NOT sign your name on this post :-0
However, as a common courtesy, it's nice for everyone to "sign" their
name at the end of any correspondence, whether email, typed or hand
written letter. I know I try to so that people don't have to go back
and look through their mail headers.
BTW, most mailer systems permit some sort of signature file to be used.
It can be as simple as your name and email address or as complicated as
some of the freeview ascii art that I've seen used. These files are
automatically added to the end of each mail message you send out,
automatically "signing" your mail. Most unix systems also use the
comments field of the password file to translate the userid to a
readable form in email addresses. And Netscape's Communicator software
has a configuration page for your mail identity which lets you specify
your name, email address, reply to address, your organization and a
signature file. You can also attach your address book card (like a
rolodex card) to each message for others to include in their address
book.
HTH,
Ron
