If you have published works containing images from antique stereoviews,
your assistance would be appreciated, as I prepare to lead a workshop.
Please send the following information to me at <sstiles@xxxxxxx>:
Your full name:
(an address, if you are willing to be contacted):
Your published work(s) listed by title, date and place of publication or
ISBN prefix:
A word of advice you would give to anyone thinking about publishing
stereo views:
What you found most rewarding about the project(s) you did:
What unexpected challenge(s) you encountered:
What specific publishing format you found most suitable for your
work(s):
Thank you.
Your response, before August 1, 1998, will be shared with
participants at the workshop, which I understand will be on Sunday
afternoon, August 9, 1998. For the NSA '98 Convention, I have proposed
the workshop that will consider what is involved in the process of
publishing antique stereo images.
Actually the discussion on P3D regarding what could be done to preserve
and exhibit the collections of stereoviews that some of us have amassed
had led me to consider the possibility of publishing an annotated album,
showing some personally meaningful exhibit. While the album would not
be originals, it would identify and illustrate the actual collection.
It would be one step better than a catalog. It might even sell in some
limited market, providing enough returns to pay for the cost of the
publication. If it really sold, one might even be able to endow a
foundation to pay for the maintaining of the original collection in some
museum, or library! At least the images themselves would be available
for many more people to enjoy from the book than would be typical of a
museum exhibit, or a library archive. Furthermore, the collector
/ publisher retains control what views are included in the album.
Following that discussion, I decided to compile and annotate
Stereoscopic Saratoga Springs, which is based upon the stereoviews my
family had collected as residents of that resort city. The publishing
process has been eye opening. I think we should share what we have
learned.
If you will be at Richmond, you are welcome to attend the
workshop.
