Steve - now, that's interesting. On my 3.5, there is nothing in that position at all. The
knob simply pulls up and is stopped by a lip flare at the bottom of the shaft.
On my 2.8, it isn't a screw, but rather is a spring backed ball bearing. When you pull
up on the knob, the bearing is pushed back into the body of the shaft. When it's down,
the bearing sticks out a little bit, preventing the shaft from being pulled up unless you
do it intentionally. However, I can't see that it would affect film advance right offhand.
I don't have a clue as to how you'd replace that bearing, although it's not blindingly
obvious that you'd need to.
I'd never noticed that difference between the 3.5 and the 2.8. It does give the 2.8 a more
satisfying "clunk" feel when you pull the knob up, though, as the bearing slides thru
the channel.
