P3D 3D Imax
Hi all:
A few days ago the wife and I were in Galveston, TX for a little sight
seeing. We were able to get by the Galveston Imax Theatre at Moody Gardens
for a show. We saw "Mark Twain's America" in stereo. Quite good.
The projection is cross polarized and everyone is given large owl-like
glasses as they file into the theatre. We chose a seating position as close
the center (left to right and top to bottom) as the que would allow us.
First, the feature is interesting. The fact that it was done in 3D just
made it more so. There were numerous scenes in which the 3D aspect was
played to the fullest. There was a Civil War re-enactment scene in which
scores of musket and saber bearing infantry charge into the audience. There
was a very delightful scene of boys swinging on a rope into the Mississippi
River. Of course they swung into the audience and splashed water onto us as
well. There was a scene involving a steam locomotive which I thought was
especially effective. There was a shot showing the connecting rods driving
the wheels which was particularly good. And many more.
The movie was about 55 minutes long and only cost $7/person. I thought it
was a bargain. The only complaint I had was that I had just gotten my first
pair of tri-focal glasses two days before and I was not quite used to them.
I did a lot of head bobbing in order to keep the screen in focus and to
look all around it. I might consider getting a pair of distance-only
corrected glasses made for screen viewing.
Galveston is an excellent city for shooting stereo. I would recommend the
sailing barq Elysa, the railroad museum, the Lone Star Aviation Museum and
the Moody Gardens.
How many more 3D Imax's are there? And where are they?
