I assume you have checked the negatives for proper exposure (to rule
out poor film printing). It is underpowered indoors but I'm surprised
your having exposure problems with 400 ASA outdoors.

Why not use a slave flash or connecting a Wien peanut thingy to an
another existing flash.

Well as to the question if it is all crap, it all depends. Exposure 
wise it is not too bad (for some reason, not in your case evidently).
Considering the price and optical paths it takes, it's amazing that
it isn't worse, but in general I would stay away from it, especially
if your a professional. The optical quality is poor even for my
standards, who uses cheapo (price wise) twin P&S cameras.
