I'd like to support BobH's statement about scanning v. digital camera.

("The BEST digital camera $25,000 class has been compared to
quality of a 110 format film camera..so with half frame on up a
scanner should do better.")

At work I have used the highest resolution digital camera backs (BigShot
- will set you back over $50,000) and it is true that going the
conventional chemical way is still the much more interesting solution.

Consider:
The cost of a frame on a 35mm film.

Consider:
This frame has a (theoretical)capacity of arguably 1 Gig (that doesn't
mean, of course it will have to be that size , O.K.?;).

Consider:
What a cheap and easy to store format that is.

Consider:
Will the data a digital camera gives you still be of value in 20 years?
(Or can you mount a 70s data tape on your PC?)

I also use the Canoscan and can really recomend it. There is nothing
more attractive in quality out there in that price range.
If you call yourself wealthy and think 2700dpi at 30Bits is not enough,
check out the models by Kodak and Polaroid - but the better scanners
will cost double.
I do use the Canoscan on a Mac and you do not need to download the
Software unlike BobH said. It's on the CD that comes with it.
This machine actually provided me with my most amazing plug and play
experience so far. It came with this CD and several handbooks for
Windows, an intimidating device that looked like you'd have to unscrew
your PC for it ( a PCI card or something) and not a scrap of information
about what to do with it on a Mac.
So I just connected the cable from scanner to SCSI chain, dropped the
Plug-in into Photoshop and it worked eversince without any hickups.
