P3D Automated Realist dupes - early Viewmaster production

What would it take to mass-produce Realist dupes? 
Seems that the few places offering this service charge a hell
of a lot; might be fine for hobbyists, but if anyone wanted to 
sell Realist slides commercially, I can't imagine how they'd
ever make a profit from it. 

Viewmaster reel production, I assume, is completely automated.
I also assume that, at one time, it wasn't. At what point did
Viewmaster reel production become automated, and how much would
such a machine cost?
