   It does, in that before there could be color films that catch all
colors and discriminate between them, there had to be film that caught
all colors in the first place.


It's a black and white film that

  Actually, Orthochromatic film was blind to red light, sensitive to
blue and green.  This was in improvement over original films there were
sensitive only to blue and ultraviolet light, resulting in high
contrast, blackened faces and stark-white skies.

   If true, it may have been that pan film was too expensive for the
heavy appetite for film movie cameras have.
