When it comes to stereography, almost anything you can think of has been
tried. In 1982 a professor of media arts at the University of South
Carolina named Porter McLaurin along with his colleague Edwin R. Jones, a
physicist, showed videotape footage of their autostereoscopic TV process
they called "Visidep" on ABC with a nationally syndicated television
program named "That's Incredible."

Visidep used rapidly alternating pairs of "stereo" images (10 times per
second) created with vertical parallax. McLaurin and Jones described their
system in a paper titled "Visidep: Three-Dimensional Imaging Through
Alternating Pairs" which was presented in 1989 at the International
Conference on Three-Dimensional Media Technology in Montreal, Canada.

The authors found that when vertical parallax "was reduced to 10 to 20mm,
the stability of the image is restored (for unaided viewing) and a more
satisfactory effect is achieved."

McLaurin and Jones summarized: "Thus by using sequential images with
vertical parallax presented at a rate of approximately ten changes of view
point per second, the VISIDEP system presents a three-dimensional image
which can be viewed with the unaided eye. Because of the unique approach
of this system, no special equipment is required for transmitting,
broadcasting, receiving, recording, or playing back these 3-D images in any
video format."

Despite several marketing attempts, no widespread commercial application of
Visidep ever took place. It is yet another unique example of the attempt
to find the "Holy Grail" of 3-D: a simple and universal autostereoscopic
system.
