No, I think that's probably close. I'm guessing it's due to dirty contacts.
If the contacts are dirty, they may produce a connection with high
resistance. This high resistance connection may be okay for some flashes,
but not others. (Imagine a kinked hose that keeps some sprinklers from
operating, but not others.)
Burnishing the contacts is easy. If you want to try this, take the front
of the Realist off. The contacts are at the lower right. Put a slip of
typing paper between the contacts and wiggle it about, with the contacts
closed. Do this a couple times til the flash fires reliably. (The Realist
cover comes off with the four front screws and two at the top. Easy.)
I have one that does the exact same thing, and this worked for me.
